Ashwagandha: What It Actually Does and Why I Use It in My Formulas

The Hype vs. The Reality

Ashwagandha is everywhere right now. Influencers swear by it. Supplement companies put it in everything. It's marketed as a cure-all for stress, anxiety, fatigue, brain fog, low libido, insomnia, and just about every modern ailment you can name. I too am guilty of putting it in most of my formulas. It’s that good.

That said, Ashwagandha isn't for everyone.

Like all powerful herbs, ashwagandha works best when it's used appropriately, for the right person, in the right context, and in combination with other plants that balance and harmonize its effects. Single herbs can be helpful. But formulas are where the real healing happens.

What Ashwagandha Actually Does

Ashwagandha is an adaptogen, which means it helps the body adapt to stress. But more specifically, it's a warming, building, and gently moving herb. In Ayurvedic medicine, it's considered a rasayana, a rejuvenative tonic that nourishes deep vitality.

It works best for people who are truly depleted. The ones who have been pushing too hard for too long and now feel burned out, hollowed out, like there's nothing left in the tank. The person whose stress isn't just mental anymore, it's physical. Their body feels weak. Their sleep is disrupted. Their capacity to handle even small things has disappeared.

In Chinese medicine terms, ashwagandha tonifies qi, essence, and calms the Shen. It builds foundational energy, strengthens the nervous system, and helps restore resilience when your reserves are completely tapped. It's not a quick fix. It's a slow, deep rebuild.

When Ashwagandha Isn't the Answer

Ashwagandha is warming. And for some people, that warmth turns into heat. If you're already running hot (irritable, inflamed, restless, prone to anger or frustration), ashwagandha can make you feel worse. It can overheat you, make you more agitated, amplify the very tension you're trying to release.

It's also not ideal if your system is already congested. If your digestion feels sluggish, your body feels heavy, or you have that thick, sticky feeling of stagnation, ashwagandha can add to the problem. It's a building herb, and if your system is already full, there's nowhere for that energy to go.

Not all stress is depletion. Sometimes stress shows up as heat. Sometimes it shows up as stagnation. And in those cases, ashwagandha on its own isn't what you need.

Why I Use It in Formulas, Not Alone

In traditional Chinese herbal medicine, we rarely use single herbs to address complex conditions. The body is too layered, too dynamic. Herbs work better when they're woven together with others that enhance, moderate, and balance their effects.

Ashwagandha is warming and moving. On its own, it can overheat or overstimulate. So when I include it in a formula, I pair it with cooling herbs that temper its heat, grounding herbs that anchor its energy, and calming herbs that prevent agitation. This allows the formula to rebuild and strengthen without tipping you into restlessness or inflammation.

Each herb plays a role. Some lead, some support, some keep the others in check. Together, they create something more effective, more nuanced, and safer than any single ingredient could be on its own.

Where Ashwagandha Lives

I use ashwagandha in formulas designed to support deep nervous system depletion, especially when there's a combination of anxiety, fatigue, and feeling scattered or unmoored. The kind of exhaustion that comes with being wired and tired at the same time.

In these formulas, ashwagandha is never alone. It's surrounded by herbs that cool and calm, that ground and anchor, that nourish blood and yin, that gently move qi without forcing anything. This combination allows ashwagandha to do what it does best without overwhelming the system.

The result is a formula that calms without sedating, strengthens without overstimulating, and grounds without creating heaviness.

Knowing What You Need

Your body will tell you if ashwagandha is right for you. If you feel depleted, burned out, like you're running on nothing. If your stress is accompanied by weakness, exhaustion, the sense that you have nothing left to give. If you feel anxious and exhausted at the same time, like your nervous system is frayed and your resilience has vanished, ashwagandha in a well-balanced formula can help.

But if you feel hot, irritable, inflamed, stuck, heavy, or congested, taking ashwagandha as a single probably isn't your answer. You may need herbs that cool, that move, that clear rather than just build.

Your body knows. You just have to listen.

The Synergy of Plants

Ashwagandha is a beautiful, powerful herb. But it's not a miracle, and it's not for everyone. It works best when used thoughtfully, in context, in relationship with other plants that balance and support what it does.

This is why I create formulas instead of recommending single herbs. Your body isn't one-dimensional. Your stress isn't one-dimensional. Your medicine shouldn't be either.

When herbs are combined with care, with knowledge, with respect for how they interact, they become something greater than themselves. They become true allies in healing.
